Your gut is often referred to as your 'second brain' because it contains millions upon billions of neurons, which communicate with your brain through the vagus nerve.
This connection is responsible for the production and regulation of neurotransmitters—chemicals including Serotonin and Dopamine that are key players in mood regulation.

For women, diet is especially influential due to hormonal fluctuations throughout the month.
The hormones Oestrogen and Progesterone not only affect physical health but also interact with your neurotransmitters, influencing mood, sleep and energy levels.

So, how does diet affect your mood?
When your diet is rich in whole foods—think fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy (unsaturated) fats—it supports gut health, keeps hormone levels in check and ensures a steady supply of nutrients that your brain and gut needs to function optimally.
